Welcome
Relationships Australia South Australia
Annual Report 2018/19

Acknowledgment of Country
Relationships Australia South Australia acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians; their spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual and economic connection to the Land and Seas, and we apologise for the atrocities that have been perpetrated on them and their ancestors. We recognise the continued impact of this trauma on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians today.
We are committed to an ongoing process of reconciliation and will actively engage in redressing inequitable distributions of the physical, spiritual and political economy, in regards to Australian Indigenous issues.
We especially honour the Kaurna Elders of the Adelaide Plains and the Elders of the River Murray and Mallee Region, which includes: Ngaiawang, Ngawait, Nganguruku, Erawirung, Ngintait, Ngaraite, Ngarkat and small parts of Maraura and Daanggali, upon whose land Relationships Australia South Australia offices are located.
Dedication
We dedicate this annual report to all children and young people who use our services and programs.
We also dedicate this annual report to our staff for their commitment to quality services, as well as, their contribution to a positive workplace culture. They make Relationships Australia South Australia an inspiring and effective place to work in. The successful achievement of the award level accreditation in the ASES audit is an acknowledgement of this.
This online annual report complements the printed “colouring-in” annual report – view a digital copy here.
Messages from our President and CEO

Supporting families to grow and maintain positive and healthy relationships is a significant contribution Relationships Australia South Australia (RASA) makes to the quality of our community. This year we are pleased to have expanded our support for families and individuals who have suffered intergenerational trauma and abuse, especially for those families involved in the child protection services, veteran families and individuals living in aged care facilities.
Franco Camatta, President of the board.

Helping parents who use our services to be confident and proud of their parenting and enjoy their time with their children is a central feature of RASA programs. Feedback from parents using our services this year indicated we strengthened their parenting, with 80% saying they managed better as a parent, and their children were better off since coming to RASA. These results demonstrate a strong focus on children’s needs and emerge from our staff commitment to ‘think children and young people’ no matter which service or program they work in.
Claire Ralfs PhD, CEO

Strategic Goals

Our Approach
To achieve our intended impact, we:
- focus on those who are vulnerable and most disadvantaged
- provide services which intervene early and have a holistic approach to complex needs
- respect cultural connections and beliefs
- ensure services achieve sustainable outcomes for the people we help
- focus on service improvement and innovation and work collaboratively with others to achieve a more just society.
Our work is driven by three interrelated systems – quality services, evaluation and research, and education and training.
Our Pulse
Curiosity and creativity – we are open to enquiry and discovery; we are committed to learning individually, as a team, as an organisation and as a community. We use obstacles to drive innovation.
Do our bit well – we are realistic, practical, simple but not simplistic. We recognise that clients change their lives; we at best inspire, enable and support change. We build partnerships with other services and we recognise our limits.
Walk together in harmony – We listen respectfully to different perspectives and we are open to influence. The spirit of working in harmony is about generosity, humility and respect for the differences we each bring to our partnerships. ‘Walk together in harmony’ is an expression that Kaurna Elder Uncle Lewis Yerloburka O’Brien uses.

Annual Snapshot Survey
Every year Relationships Australia South Australia (RASA) conducts an anonymous client survey, the Annual Snapshot Survey. Over 1,000 clients respond to the survey every year, which is held for 28 consecutive days across all RASA sites.
Some of our services work with clients who have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing, child abuse or out of home care. Many of these clients are compelled to attend services through external pressure (e.g. court orders, pressure from schools and/or parents, experience of out-of-home care or guardianship). These services include the Children’s Contact Service, Family Dispute Resolution, Family Relationship Centres, Post Care Support Services and RASA youth service called Future Youth Initiative who offer Flexible Learning Programs (FLO) programs.
While these clients are ‘easy to reach’ due to a compulsion to attend services, they can also be hard to engage for the same reason. They attend because they have to, not because they want to. It is therefore pleasing to see from Annual Snapshot Survey data that services which support these typically easy to reach, hard to engage clients show consistently high levels of satisfaction with RASA, and that a majority of clients indicate they have increased capacity since accessing our services.
